First Nations Bear Catching Salmon measures 18 x 10 x .75 inches, priced at $1450. This is an absolutey stunning panel. The carving is very meticulous and detailed. The artist surehandedly achieved a beautiful ripple texture throughout the surface of the piece. Traditional cinnabar and black paint colors are joined with a bit of contemporary green.
This artist is a member of the Squamish Nation which consists of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal peoples, originating from the greater Vancouver area, Gibson’s Landing and Squamish River watershed. This young artist’s style is a blend of strong family Kwakwaka’wakw art styles, and unique personal taste towards contemporary inspirations. He is a member of a premier artistic family.
The Native Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature. Known as the Protector of the animal kingdom, the Bear is the most powerful coastal animal.
In the Haida culture, the Bear is known as “Elder Kinsman” and is treated as a noble guest. Whenever a Bear is killed it is brought inside and eagle down is spread upon it to show respect. The Bear is also known for its human-like qualities.
Legend says that a First Nations chief’s daughter fell in love with and married a Bear, who happened to be the nephew of the Great Bear Chief. She gave birth to twin bear cubs and was known as the Bear Mother. This created a close relationship between Bears and humans.
