This artist was born in 1972 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, of both Coast Salish (father) and Kwakwaka’wakw (mother) descent. He began carving at the age of eleven, and was taught by his Salish grandfather and by the Kwakiutl master carvers Jackson and William Robertson.
He prefers to carve in both red and yellow cedar, which he uses to create finely, detailed plaques and amazing freestanding totems. Now considered to be a master carver, has taken on apprentices and is proud to aid in the preservation of his cultures artistic traditions.
In contemporary times, the Kwakwaka’wakw people have been active in the revitalization of their culture and language, and their artwork, particularly the totem poles, have been recognized and widely appreciated.
Coastal Salish people believe that through dances, masks, or ceremonies they express themselves through the spiritual powers that they are given. Spirit dancing ceremonies are common gatherings during the winter for members of the community to show their spirit powers through song, or dance.
