The Delta River table

On this page are some pictures of the process I used to make my first large epoxy river table for a customer. We nicknamed this table “Delta” because of the islands in the rivers. Our customers can choose the wood and epoxy details just as this one did for this custom table.

Shown Below: The two halves of the Delta table. No mistakes allowed. 8 feet long and 35″ wide. Painted on a seal of epoxy to seal edges and to fill small voids. Square outside edges were sculpted later to look natural and flowing. Shown Below: The Delta river table is flipped top side down. We fabricated two steel runners with brackets that will become part of the finished table base. These will hold the pieces flat. The cross pieces are tacked on temporarily to stabilize the frame and establish width. A plywood back is attached to support the epoxy pours. I use plywood backing and Tyvek tape and/or plastic sheet for the no-stick surfaces needed. Shown Below: There was so much space between the river edges I suggested river deltas on each end, and islands in the center. The customer came to the workshop and we chose wood and laid out the design. These burl islands were sanded and shaped. Over 7 gallons of epoxy were used. You can help design anything we do for you. Shown Below: The rivers and islands are now sanded and sealed with epoxy ready for the first base pour, where you find out how level and how leak proof things are. In this case not and not. Adjust and keep movin’. Frantic fun. Shown Below: A photo during the final skim coat process. There were 3 final skim coats, then the top and bottom were sanded and buffed back to a mirror finish. The customer wanted blue heron blue clear color “water”. Clear pours are more difficult, solid colors don’t show air bubbles and any stray particles that may land. This table took a total of around 8 pours. Shown Below: The finished Delta river table in its new home. There are no cross members in this base design, so the river effect is unbroken. We used the two frame members shown earlier to fabricate this base onto. Satin Black powder coat finish on the iron legs.
