First Nations Bear Mask
$3,200.00
This First Nations Bear Mask is the result of an exciting collaboration between two masterful carvers based on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. The Bear Mask is carved in red cedar and measures approximately 11 x 9 x 9 inches with hand-worked traditional red cedar bark cascading to 26 inches. The excellent carving and painting detail features Mother-of-Pearl inlay. Priced at $3200.
In First Nations indigenous cultures, hand-worked red cedar bark traditionally is dried out after pulling it from the tree in the spring. A lengthy process using hand tools softens and shreds the bark so that artwork adornment, clothing, and regalia can be made from it. In times past, these tools traditionally were either made of yew wood or whale bone.
The artistic duo that created this piece shares heritage from the Capilano Reservation in North Vancouver, B.C. and influences from Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, and Cree First Nations.
The Native Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature. A Bear is of great support and comfort to those who crave human company simply for personal reassurance rather than for the simple pleasure of being with friends. He makes lonely periods of life far easier. – Thank you spiritsofthewestcoast.com
