Very unique large First Nations carving of a Canoe with Five Rowing Figures.

Bukwus
This mysterious and elusive figure is often portrayed as skeletal in mythology. Bukwus is the lord of drowned souls. He lurks on the beach near the edge of the dark forest where he lives, kindly offering food to lost humans unawares, luring them to join spirits in his watery underworld forever should they accept his offer.

Bukwus can be viewed as a guardian spirit, protecting the deep woods from intrusion and harm whilst guarding the lost seamen’s souls. He is portrayed in dance as very shy, looking about to see if he is being watched, shading his face from the sun with his hands.

Wild Man
Wild Man is a hairy bigfoot-like entity of the forest who moves silently and rarely reveals himself to humans. Frequently he steals things or causes other minor mischief. Sasquatch is the most famous legendary “wild man/bigfoot” creature. According to Coast Salish traditions, Sasquatch was a powerful but generally benign supernatural creature in the shape of a very large, hairy wild man. Its Halkomelem name is pronounced similar to sess-k-uts.
