Freeform natural White Oak wood cribbage board is finished to smooth perfection. This one, the beautifully figured Cribbage Board #5, measures 22 x 11 x 4.5, is extra large, priced at $315.

White Oak (Quercus alba) is a premier and beloved hardwood that is native to eastern and central North America and found from Minnesota, Ontario, Quebec, and southern Maine south as far as northern Florida and eastern Texas.

Careful and sustainable harvest of this valuable wood is essential. The tree does not produce large crops of acorns until its 50th year, and the amount varies from year to year. The germination rate is only 10% for six-month-old seeds. Since the acorns are prime food for insects and many animals, all may be consumed in years of small crops, leaving none that would become new trees.

Although called a white oak, it is very unusual to find an individual specimen with white bark; the usual color is a light gray. The name comes from the color of the finished wood. In the forest it can reach a magnificent height and in the open it develops into a massive broad-topped tree with large branches striking out at wide angles.

The wood of the White Oak is strong, tough, heavy, fine-grained and durable. This cribbage board is massive and gorgeous. It was handcrafted from a salvaged branch.

Manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita, Family: Ericaceae) is a small tree or shrub that is found in most of California and into southern inland Oregon. It prefers a dry and hot climate but can tolerate foggy coastal conditions well. Manzanita trees grow into twisted and forked shapes. The bark is a smooth attractive dark reddish color. The wood underneath is a creamy white and is very dense and heavy for it's size.

Manzanita wood has unique properties and is becoming a prized material for some niche markets including fine art and crafts. In areas where Manzanita is native, it can grow quite abundantly. Using Manzanita wood products is considered to be very environmentally friendly.

Manzanita burls and branch wood are both prized by wood turners and carvers for making small wood craft products. Manzanita is visually appealing because of its unique shapes and colors and it is chemically inert, resists decay and is non toxic.
