Truly a piece of history, this piece was carved in 1971 by a truly remarkable Chieftain of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation of  Canada’s West Coast, formerly known as the Burrard Indian Band or Burrard Inlet Indian Band. Red cedar wood has mellowed to a rich chocolate brown as only time will create.

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation is a First Nations band government in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation (“TWN”) are Coast Salish peoples who speak the Downriver dialect of the Halkomelem language, and are closely related to but politically and culturally separate from the nearby nations of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), with whose traditional territories some claims overlap.

The TWN is a member government of the Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council.

The most famous member of the TWN was Chief Dan George, an actor and native rights advocate best known for his role as Old Lodge Skins in Little Big Man, and other movies such as The Outlaw Josey Wales.

“We have a sacred trust, a responsibility to care for and restore our traditional territory to its former state. Our stewardship of the land, air, and water is deeply ingrained in our culture because we understand the health of our people is interconnected with the environment we inhabit.”
