The artist been inspired to carve by his elders’ stories past and present. He is a member of the Musqueam Band of the Coast Salish First Nation of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Holding on to the culture, the stories, songs, dances, and art is not only important to the artist, but to all Musqueam people. His work may be found in public and private collections in Europe, the United States, and throughout Vancouver.

Today, the Musqueam Band is a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. Many of the tribal members live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River.

They remain a distinct unit of the Coast Salish people. Musqueam cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate Musqueam people. Their tribal lands and waters continue to support their authentic cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws.

The name Musqueam relates back to a flowering plant which once abundantly grew throughout Musqueam territory.

The Salmon symbolizes abundance, fertility, prosperity and renewal. For thousands of years, Salmon have been the primary food source for Northwest Coast Native Americans and are highly respected.

Salmon are revered as a sacred and vital part of life, often seen as a gift from the Creator or as a symbol of abundance, fertility, and renewal. Tribal stories emphasize the annual salmon return and its significance in sustaining both the people and the natural world. Salmon are also seen as a link between the human and supernatural worlds, with some beliefs suggesting that they are immortal humans who live underwater.
