The Kwakiutl, also known as the Kwakwaka’wakw, are an indigenous First Nations people of the Pacific Northwest Coast in southwestern Canada. They are traditional inhabitants of coastal areas of northeastern Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland. The term “Kwakiutl” is an anglicized version of their name, and while it was initially used to refer to the entire group, it is now more specifically used to refer to one of the tribes, the Kwaguʼł, who are centered around Fort Rupert.

Key aspects of Kwakiutl culture include:
Language:
The Kwakiutl traditionally spoke Kwakʼwala, a Wakashan language with multiple dialects.
Social structure:
Rank and wealth were important components of Kwakiutl social life, with potlatch ceremonies being a significant part of expressing social dynamics.
Potlatch ceremonies:
These ceremonies were used to celebrate important events, display wealth, and reaffirm social status.
Art and culture:
Kwakiutl art is known for its theatrical designs, bold colors, and use of masks and totem poles.
Housing:
They traditionally built large, cedar-plank houses that could accommodate many families from the same clan.
Traditional territories:
The Kwakiutl’s traditional territories encompass areas in northern Vancouver Island and the surrounding coastal regions, including the Queen Charlotte Strait.
Contemporary life:
Many contemporary Kwakiutl identify as Christians but also incorporate traditional mythology into their faith, blending both religious traditions. They are also actively involved in reclaiming their rights as a First Nations people.
Governance:
The Kwakiutl First Nation operates a certified band-operated school, provides language instruction, and offers culturally related programming.
